Koga Atsumichi (久我敦通)
Atsumichi KOGA (September 25, 1565 - January 1, 1625) was a Kugyo (the top court official) who lived from the end of the Muromachi period to the Azuchi-Momoyama period. He served the Imperial Court in mainly two generations of Emperor Ogimachi (the 106th) and Emperor Goyozei (the 107th) and promoted up to Shonii Dainagon (Senior Second Rank, chief councilor of state). His father was Michikata KOGA. His mother was from the Sasaki clan. His younger brother was Michitsumu HIGASHIKUZE. His younger brother was Michikane HIGASHIKUZE. His children were Michiyo KOGA, Michisaki KOGA, and Michishiki KUZE. His original names were Yoshimichi KOGA and Suemichi KOGA. His one character name was Tachibana. His go (pen name) was Entokuin.
He was conferred peerage in 1566. Since then, he had been promoted successively up to Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank) in 1578 and was raised to Kugyo. He became Gon Dainagon (provisional chief councilor of state) in 1582 and was conferred Junii (Junior Second Rank) in 1587. He was active in communicating between the Imperial Court and the Toyotomi clan, serving as buke tenso (liaison officer between the imperial court and the military government) since 1595. With the confidence from the Toyotomi family, he was often added territory. In 1599, however, he was punished together with his son, Michiyo by the ordinance of the Emperor Goyozei and was finally expelled from Kyoto because of a scandal with a court lady.
